Development doesn’t occur in a vacuum.
Each project arises out of a unique set of circumstances and poses its own
challenges. The reward of overcoming these obstacles is hearing our residents’
stories about how they found an affordable place to live.
SPOTLIGHT - Lincoln Court
Located in Oakland's vibrant Dimond District, Lincoln Court Senior Apartments
will provide 82 units of housing to extremely-low and very-low income seniors,
many with disabilities. An on-site senior center with supportive services,
to be managed by Self Help for the Elderly, will allow residents to "age
in place" gracefully. The three-story apartment building includes a
central courtyard with lush landscaping, and incorporates green building
components such as photovoltaic panels.
Given the site’s history,
such a positive outcome
was far from guaranteed.
Just a few years ago, the
site that would become
Lincoln Court was occupied
by the Hillcrest Motel, a
blighted property known for
drug activity and prostitution.
The fight that Dimond District
residents waged to clean
up the Hillcrest inspired
passage of Oakland’s
Nuisance Ordinance,
which gives the city tools
to deal effectively with
blighted properties.
After the closure of the Hillcrest Motel in 2003, neighborhood crime dropped
by nearly 40 percent and the entire Dimond District is going through revitalization.
In partnership with neighborhood groups and the City of Oakland, Domus was
able to transform this long-neglected eyesore into a valuable addition to
the community while providing essential housing services to area seniors,
all in record time.
